Why You Keep Running From Your Own Life: Saint John Cassian on Acedia

Why do you feel the constant need to escape your own life? Saint John Cassian calls this spiritual sickness acedia: weariness or distress of heart. It is not simple tiredness. It is the restless heaviness that makes prayer feel impossible, work feel meaningless, silence feel unbearable, and the place where God has put you feel like a prison. In this Orthodox reflection, we explore Cassian’s teaching on the “midday demon”: the temptation to flee the cell, abandon the duty, chase distractions, look into other people’s lives, and believe that peace must be somewhere else. Acedia can hide behind boredom, exhaustion, procrastination, endless scrolling, spiritual excuses, and the fantasy of a different life. But Cassian teaches that this passion is not healed by running away. It is overcome by endurance, silence, prayer, humble work, and remaining faithful where grace is trying to meet you. Do not run from the battle. Stay with the prayer. Stay with the work. Stay with the duty. Grace may be waiting exactly where you wanted to leave.
