But unfortunately, it has also confirmed what we already knew: that the state is criminal and works with criminals in uniform. How is it possible that the police are only searching for money and belongings in the rubble and not helping to rescue survivors or recover bodies? How is it possible that the morgue in La Guaira is demanding exorbitant sums in dollars to release bodies that have already undergone autopsies? How is it possible that the military and the Ministry of Mines are charging workers—most of them undocumented, by the way—to work in the mining areas? How is it possible that a large percentage of state-run social programs collapsed because they failed to meet basic construction standards and were built through corruption?
