On June 23rd, a talk event for the film "The Death Penalty" was held in Tokyo, featuring co-stars Sadao Abe and Kento Okada, as well as director Kazuya Shiraishi. This film is a live-action adaptation of the novel of the same name by Riu Kushiki. It's a psychological suspense story about a university student, Kakei (played by Okada), who is asked by Harumura (played by Abe), a serial killer who shocked the world with a series of murders, to prove his innocence. He works tirelessly to uncover the truth. Since its nationwide release on May 6th, the film has maintained strong numbers in its sixth week! It has also made it into the top ten of weekend box office rankings for six consecutive weeks, surpassing the ¥900 million mark and is on the verge of hitting the milestone! A talk event was held to commemorate this huge success. A month after the film's release, Shiraishi expressed his joy at the success, saying, "It seems that there are few film adaptations of novels that have grossed over 900 million yen. I'm truly honored." Director Shiraishi said, "I hear that many people go to see this film with the same feeling as they would go to see a horror movie. Maybe people are going to go see Abe Sadao with the same feeling as, 'Let's go see Sadako!'" The audience erupted in laughter. He continued, "Well, I think the film's success is due to the passionate performances of the two actors and everyone else." In reference to the film's content, he asked, "The culprit, Harumura, has an abnormal obsession with people's fingernails. Are there any gestures or body parts on other people that you find yourself noticing?" Just like her character in the movie, Abe said, "I still find myself looking at other people's nails. People who have short nails still cut them, even though they've trimmed them quite often. I feel like it must hurt." Also, since Abe works at a bakery in the movie, she was asked, "What's your favorite bread?" When told that this was the most popular question out of all the questions asked, Abe muttered, "What do you mean, this is the most popular?" Okada also commented, "I guess there aren't many types of bread that I don't like? I like a lot of things..." They both looked a little confused. Okada answered, "I've loved cream buns since I was little," to which Abe replied, "Savory buns." Okada then retorted, "That's stingy! That's too broad!" Abe then blushed and corrected herself, saying, "Well, a hard white one. The one with hard white cheese and pink ham in between. You know that store called Viron? That one."
