Chi dimentica ha paura (Esodo 1)
Exodus, especially the first chapter, opens with a powerful and dramatic image that lays the foundation for the entire narrative of Israel's redemption. The theme of fear is immediately central: Pharaoh's fear of the growing presence and numerical strength of the people of Israel in Egypt. This fear, fueled by Joseph's forgetfulness and the perception that the Israelites might one day ally themselves with Egypt's enemies, transforms into systematic oppression. From this latent concern, a repressive policy is born, embodied in the imposition of forced labor and, later, in the dramatic decision to kill all Israelite male newborns. Here we see a fundamental shift in the narrative and theological fabric of the text: individual and collective fear generates oppression, a mechanism that readers are invited to observe as a distorted and repetitive power structure in human history. Pharaoh here represents the prototype of the oppressor, one who, gripped by his own fear, is willing to sacrifice innocent lives to maintain control. It is fear itself that blinds him, transforming Israel from a useful host into an unbearable threat. The story of the massacre of the children, therefore, is not just an episode of gratuitous violence but becomes a sort of prophetic prologue to the plagues that will fall upon Egypt. The desire to destroy the people of Israel in its infancy, annihilating male children, prefigures the self-annihilation that will strike Egypt through the plagues. In other words, it is as if the deliberate violence against Israelite children lays the foundation for a chain of poetic justice, in which the hands that oppress today will tomorrow be the victims of a superior force. From a narrative perspective, this beginning has a strong symbolic value: the community of Israel, struck and wounded in its innocence, prepares to experience redemption as a series of actions revealing the power of God. The massacre of the children is the culminating moment of Egyptian oppression, an abyss that creates a powerful contrast with the divine intervention that will follow.
