The iris of the eye controls the amount of light reaching the back of the eye by automatically adjusting the size of the pupil. The lens is located directly behind the pupil and is needed to focus light by refracting or bending the light so that it focuses on the retina. Light focused by the cornea and lens, combined with the amount controlled by the iris and pupil, will then reach the retina. The retina acts like an electronic image sensor, converting optical images into electronic signals.
