"Vande Devam Umapatim" is a revered Sanskrit hymn in praise of Lord Shiva. It is one of the most popular short Shiva stutis recited during daily worship, especially on Mondays, during the holy month of Shravan, and on Maha Shivaratri. The hymn beautifully describes Lord Shiva's divine qualities, his role as the protector of all beings, and his union with Goddess Parvati (Uma). Meaning of the opening verse वन्दे देवम् उमापतिं सुरगुरुं वन्दे जगत्कारणम्। वन्दे पन्नगभूषणं मृगधरं वन्दे पशूनां पतिम्॥ English meaning: "I bow to the Divine Lord, the husband of Goddess Uma, the teacher of the gods. I bow to the cause of the entire universe. I bow to the One adorned with serpents, who holds a deer in His hand, and who is the compassionate Lord of all living beings."
