Heuchera is considered a perennial plant because it's traditional to dig it up and replant it every 2-3 years. This is because the heuchera's rhizome grows upward and begins to protrude from the soil. Adverse weather conditions (frost, heat, wind) affect this protruding portion, and the heuchera may even die. However, few people know that you can rejuvenate a heuchera without digging it up. I do this with all my heucheras; my oldest is already 10 years old, and I've never dug it up or divided it. I trim off the entire protruding portion of the rhizome down to the lowest buds that emerged in the spring. In this video, I show how to prune four heuchera varieties (Arella, Rex Purple, Caramel, and Brownies). I did the pruning around April 10, 2022.
