For over a year, the Kormoran, under the command of Theodor Detmers, hunted across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, sinking ten merchant ships, capturing another, and repeatedly deceiving its opponents with false flags and constantly changing camouflage. On November 19, 1941, the camouflaged hunter encountered the Australian light cruiser Sydney off the coast of Western Australia, and this encounter became one of the most dramatic and deadly naval battles in the entire history of warfare.
