Lonicera fragrantissima ETYMOLOGY The term Lonicera was coined by Linnaeus in 1753, adapting the surname "Lonitzer" to Latin, in memory of the botanist Adam Lonitzer. TAXONOMY Lonicera is part of the Caprifoliaceae family and is a genus of approximately 200 species of shrubs and climbing plants, woody, evergreen, and deciduous. Generally, except for L. hildebrandiana and L. semprevirens, they are hardy and hardy plants. The hardy climbing species are suitable for walls, fences, and pergolas, while the shrubs can be used in mixed borders. MORPHOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION The flowers of Lonicera are tubular, with more or less developed terminal lobes, grouped in pairs; these are either solitary or clustered in inflorescences. Particularly in the shrubby species, the flower pairs are often fused, as are the (poisonous!) berries that form later. The flowers are often scented, especially those of the climbing species. Lonicera fragrantissima reaches a height and diameter of about 2-3 m. It is an evergreen shrub with obovate leaves and highly scented, creamy-white flowers, 1.5 cm long, which bloom from December to March.
