Roddy Piper vs Greg Valentine Dog Collar Match Promos (NWA) (1983) The rivalry between Piper and Valentine exploded in April 1983 over the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship. Roddy Piper, performing as a massive fan favorite in NWA’s Mid-Atlantic territory, defeated Greg Valentine for the title on April 16, 1983. Two weeks later, on April 30, Valentine sought his revenge in a brutal rematch. During the bout, Valentine attacked Piper outside the ring, striking him over the left side of the head with the heavy steel buckle of the championship belt. Piper's left eardrum was ruptured, causing a massive blood clot and resulting in a 50% to 75% permanent loss of hearing, while severely damaging his physical equilibrium. The referee stopped the match, awarding the title back to Valentine due to the injury. In the Summer of 1983, Piper returned to Mid-Atlantic television determined to get revenge on Valentine, and even forming a temporary alliance with Ric Flair. Eventually in a battle to settle it all, Jim Crockett Jr. granted Piper the freedom to design a specialized stipulation. Piper conceptualized a Dog Collar Match. The Rules: Both men’s necks would be chained together by heavy leather dog collars connected by a 10-to-12-foot steel logging chain. There were no disqualifications and no time limits. The only way to win was by pinfall or submission, forcing both men into a confined, inescapable battlefield where the chain itself became a legal weapon. By November 1983, the narrative was no longer just about the United States Championship; it was a pure, unadulterated grudge match centered on physical survival, setting the stage for what many fans consider the most brutal match of the inaugural Starrcade event. #wrestling 3prowrestling #roddypiper #gregvalentine #starrcade #dogcollarmatch #promos #classicmoments
