What Jimmy Stewart Confessed About His 20 Bombing Runs Before He Died

#WW2 #MilitaryHistory #JimmyStewart In the spring of 1944, a B-24 Liberator called the Dixie Flyer was losing altitude over Nazi Germany. Two engines had been hit by German anti-aircraft fire. The man in the left seat — the aircraft commander — kept it level, talked his crew through it, and got them home. He always got them home. Twenty times, he got them home. You know his face from "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." But before those films, and after most of them, Jimmy Stewart carried something that face never showed. He gave up $12,000 a month to enlist as a private. He flew 20 combat missions over Nazi Germany with the 8th Air Force. He came home a different man — and for decades, he refused to talk about why. Near the end of his life, he finally did. This is the true story of what Jimmy Stewart did in World War II — and the letter his father slipped into his pocket the day he left that stayed with him on every mission he ever flew. If your father, grandfather, or someone you loved served in WWII, share their name in the comments. Let's remember them together. ————————————— Topics: Jimmy Stewart World War II B-24 Liberator, 703rd Bombardment Squadron 8th Air Force, Jimmy Stewart Distinguished Flying Cross, Jimmy Stewart combat missions Nazi Germany, Jimmy Stewart PTSD battle fatigue, Hollywood stars who served WWII, Jimmy Stewart true war story, Dixie Flyer B-24, Jimmy Stewart brigadier general, WWII bomber crew casualties ————————————— Sources: Munn, Michael — Jimmy Stewart: The Truth Behind the Legend (2006) Dewey, Donald — James Stewart: A Biography (1996) The National WWII Museum — nationalww2museum.org 8th Air Force Historical Society — 8thafhs.org U.S. Army Air Forces records — Distinguished Flying Cross citations, James M.
