History Happy Hour: Idaho Ebony

“There is no reason for them to remain invisible partners in the making of the state. [Afro-American citizens] are a proud part of Idaho’s past and vital contributors to its present and future. We salute these ebony citizens of Idaho!” – Dr. Mamie Oliver, Idaho Ebony: The Afro-American Presence in Idaho State History. As the first African American professor at Boise State University in 1972, the author of Idaho Ebony: The Afro-American Presence in Idaho State History, and the instigator for adding the St. Paul Baptist Church to the National Register of Historic Places, Dr. Mamie Oliver’s contributions to the retention of Black Idahoan history are vast and prominent. Watch Dr. Mamie Oliver in this History Happy Hour as she discussed how she broke barriers and inspired countless others in Idaho and beyond to do the same. Moderator Alison Espindola (Events and Rentals Coordinator, Idaho State Museum) discussed with Dr. Oliver her life, work, and knowledge of Black history both in Idaho and across the United States.
