If children understand syllables, reading becomes easier, spelling becomes clearer, and decoding becomes faster. A syllable is simply a word part that contains one vowel sound. For example: cat → 1 syllable ta-ble → 2 syllables ba-na-na → 3 syllables When we break words into syllables, children can read long words without fear. And here is something interesting — English has 7 main types of syllables! Let’s learn them one by one. 🌟 1. Closed Syllable A closed syllable ends with a consonant, which closes the vowel and makes it short. Examples: cat bed sun nap-kin Here the vowels say their short sounds: /a/, /e/, /u/. Closed syllables are the most common syllable type in English. 🌟 2. Open Syllable An open syllable ends with a vowel, and the vowel says its long sound. Examples: me go he ta-ble Because nothing closes the vowel, it becomes long and strong. 🌟 3. Silent E Syllable (Magic E) In this type, the word ends with silent e, which makes the vowel say its name. Examples: cake bike rope cube The magic e changes the vowel sound. Example: cap → cape kit → kite 🌟 4. Vowel Team Syllable When two vowels work together to make one sound, it is called a vowel team.
