May 5th is the feast of Saint Boniface; a religious man born in 680 who lived in a Benedictine monastery from childhood, and who refused to be elected superior of the Monastery to become a missionary. He leaves for Germany with the blessing of Pope Saint Gregory II, and is not afraid to challenge the German pagans, whose religion worshipped above all war and strength; in order to demonstrate the power of the Lord of Hosts. He enters a pagan sanctuary where the enormous Oak of Dunar (Tor) was worshipped and single-handedly cuts it down with an axe. The pagans, surprised by Tor's inability to defend his sanctuary, watch in astonishment as a huge wind causes the very roots of the oak to be torn out. The strength of Boniface's God prevailed. Is this the attitude that a Catholic would expect from someone who spent his entire life in a monastery? It may be that our view of religious people suffers from great errors, which even greatly hinder our spiritual life. What are these errors? What should we think of the so-called "Benedictine option"?
