Walking in Hamburg / Vom Bahnhof Altona zum Fischmarkt 4K

Today's walk leads from Altona train station to the charming fish market, located directly on the Elbe River. The fishing settlement of Altona was first documented in 1537 and was granted city rights by the Danish king, Frederick III, in 1664. With 12,000 inhabitants, Altona was the second-largest Danish city after Copenhagen in 1710. Three years later, Swedish troops burned most of the houses and buildings during the Northern War. In 1863, the Danes were forced to withdraw from Altona following their defeat in the German-Danish War – their rule ended after more than 200 years. Its independence as a Schleswig-Holstein city came to an end in 1937: Under the Nazis, it became a district of Hamburg by law. According to Richard Ehrenberg, the name Altona could derive from the fact that, in the opinion of the Hamburg council, the place was “all too close” to the city limits.
