Ancient authors report that the city and its inhabitants were swallowed by a massive tsunami. For the people of the ancient world, this destruction was so shocking that they attributed it to the wrath of Poseidon. The sea god, they claimed, had triggered an earthquake with his trident, which then caused the tidal wave. Over the millennia, the memory of Helike and its precise location faded. Fact and legend became intertwined. Helike's fate bears an uncanny resemblance to Atlantis, the famous city from Plato's tale. Could Helike be rediscovered? And was its demise perhaps an inspiration for the Atlantis myth? The first tangible piece of evidence is an ancient coin inscribed with "ELIK," the name of Helike. Later, archaeologists searched the Gulf of Corinth using sonar technology, but the search initially proved fruitless. It was Dora Katsonopoulou who reread the ancient texts and realized: Helike might not lie on the seabed, but rather beneath a former lagoon inland.
