World War II. Film 3. Lend-Lease. Documentary. Commissioned by JSC CTV. Production: Grad Studio (History Lab). © 2019 By early 1941, most of Europe was occupied by Nazi Germany. In a matter of weeks, Poland was destroyed, and Belgium, Holland, France, Norway, and Denmark were captured. Luftwaffe squadrons bombed Great Britain daily. In this situation, the United States decided to aid the Allies. On March 11, 1941, President Roosevelt signed the Lend-Lease Act—economic aid to countries fighting against Hitler. Six months later, this program was extended to the USSR. Over the course of the war, American convoys, overcoming difficulties and mortal danger, delivered millions of tons of military supplies, thousands of tanks, aircraft, and vehicles to the Soviet Union. What role did American aid play in the Soviet Union? When did Russia repay its Lend-Lease debts? And how did this program impact the US economy? The documentary film series "World War II" is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. The project explores little-known chapters in the history of World War II, the economies of the warring powers, the secrets of behind-the-scenes diplomacy, and the fates of ordinary soldiers, prisoners of war, and concentration camp inmates.
