Csárdás - Monti (Violin and Piano)｜Eimi Wakui

Vittorio Monti (1868–1922) was an Italian composer, violinist, and conductor, best remembered today for his fiery and virtuosic showpiece "Csárdás", composed around 1904. Inspired by the traditional Hungarian folk dance of the same name, the piece has become a favorite in the violin repertoire, known for its dramatic contrasts, expressive flair, and technical brilliance. The word "csárdás" refers to a Hungarian dance form that typically alternates between two contrasting sections: the slow, expressive lassú and the fast, energetic friss. Monti’s Csárdás embraces this structure wholeheartedly, beginning with a mournful and improvisatory introduction before bursting into a whirlwind of rapid, dance-like passages. From the very first notes, the piece evokes a sense of raw emotion and folk-inspired lyricism. The violin sings with a free, almost improvisational spirit, then leaps into fast-paced runs, dazzling articulation, and fiery rhythms. Techniques such as spiccato, left-hand pizzicato, and dramatic shifts in tempo and character showcase the violin’s full expressive and virtuosic range. In this performance, I present Monti’s Csárdás in its arrangement for violin and piano. My interpretation aims to capture both the earthy passion of Eastern European folk music and the refined sensibility of classical concert tradition. I strive to maintain a sense of spontaneity while also honoring the structural elegance that makes this piece so enduring. For me, "Csárdás" is a celebration of music’s power to speak directly to the heart—without words, and beyond borders. In just a few minutes, it tells a story of longing, joy, sorrow, and exuberance.
