Most people think boxing is one of the best martial arts for self-defense because it teaches you how to punch. I actually think that's one of the least important reasons. After more than 20 years competing, sparring and coaching, I've become convinced that boxing's greatest self-defense skill isn't punching at all. It's learning how to stay calm under pressure, manage distance, move your feet and make good decisions when adrenaline kicks in. In this video I explain why I believe boxing is so effective for real-world self defense, why sparring develops composure better than almost any other form of training, and why the goal of self defense should never be winning a fight—it should always be getting yourself home safely.
