2026 first quarter crime stats show 20% drop in murders

The official crime statistics for the first quarter of 2026 show a striking 20% drop in murders compared to the same period in 2024, with 5,181 incidents recorded. While some officials attribute this to targeted policing and the end of load-shedding, independent researchers warn that celebrating a downward trend in public data might be masking a far deeper, dark crisis brewing inside South African homes.
