It's a few years old, 5 to be exact, but I see it as a good choice for your middle schooler who needs technological support for some subjects, or maybe for your grandmother who has a 2010 computer that takes her all of Sunday lunch just to open Chrome. Plus, like all the iPads I'll recommend in this video, it now supports iPadOS 17, and will receive iPadOS 18 in September. Of course, don't expect the most modern features; we're talking about an iPad with the old design, which includes things like Touch ID and the Lightning port, and supports the original Apple Pencil. generation, but if you're not too picky and want an iPad on a budget, the Air 3 delivers the goods. As alternatives at this price point, we have the iPad 8, which I personally don't find particularly convincing as it costs almost the same and is a decidedly inferior product. It even only has 32GB of storage, so I'd say stay away. Alternatively, we can look at the iPad 9, which makes more sense. Essentially, comparing the iPad Air 3 and the iPad 9, the Air 3 wins in terms of screen, while the 9 has a better front-facing camera. Furthermore, the 9 tends to cost a bit more, so unless you plan on using the iPad for video calls for many hours a day, I'd go with the Air 3, which for me takes the gold medal in this price range. We'll raise the budget by €150, bringing it to around €400, to find the iPad Air 4, which isn't just a generational leap. Oh my god, yes it is, but it brings so many new features: a square, full-screen design, USB-C, and Apple Pencil 2 compatibility. In short, it's a modern iPad in every way, and it's newer too. This alone makes it an excellent companion device for those who already have a Mac and want to use it as a secondary device. Really, if it's an extra, there's no need to spend more. An alternative is definitely the iPad 10, which is newer and also has the advantage over the Air of an improved front-facing camera, both because it's located on the long edge—the right one, in other words—it has automatic framing and higher quality. It's also newer, meaning it has more years of software support, and it's the first iPad we've found for this price, new and not refurbished, if that matters to you. But I still prefer the Air, both for the Apple Pencil 2—I remind you that the iPad 10 is compatible with the first-generation one or at most the USB-C Apple Pencil—and for the display, which on the Air is laminated, meaning glued to the front glass, which definitely makes for a better user experience. Let's raise the budget, let's say we have around €600 to spend. What should we buy? My favorite name here is the iPad Pro 2020, obviously the 11" model. And I like it for many reasons, just to name a couple: Face ID and Promotion, and the hyper-fluid 120Hz display. So, practically all the technologies are there; the only question is how many years of software support it still has left, but I'm counting on at least two-thirds. But I also say, keep an eye on the market because there can be some very interesting deals. For example, I found this iPad Pro 2021, the next generation, refurbished on Amazon in excellent condition for €609, which seems like a real steal. Looking at the alternatives, there's definitely the iPad Air 5, which I frankly like less because it doesn't have Promotion, it doesn't have Face ID but Touch ID, it only has 64GB of storage space while the Pro starts at 128GB, and it has less powerful and less defined speakers. Just be careful, if you want Apple intelligence on your iPad, when it comes out, you need an iPad with an M1 processor or later, so, iPad Air 5 and iPad Pro 2021 are in, iPad Pro 2020 is not.
