The Gorky Sanatorium is one of the few places where you can admire the luxurious estates of Odessa aristocrats in the Kyivskyi district of Odessa. The health resort was first mentioned in 1900. Incidentally, it is the only seaside resort in Ukraine with mineral wells. The first reports of healing springs at the sanatorium date back to 1878. Anyone can stroll freely around the sanatorium grounds. People often walk through the health resort to the sea and with their children. An atmosphere of peace and relaxation reigns here, a haven from the bustle of the city. The history of the sanatorium continues to be debated among local historians. According to property records, it was a dacha belonging to one branch of the Brodsky merchant family. It's unclear which one, though: whether it belonged to the famous Kyiv sugar refiners or their Odessa relatives. Other sources say the house belonged to the Greek merchant Petrokokino. Legend has it that it was in this 19th-century estate that the wedding of the daughter of the "sugar king" Lazar Brodsky was celebrated. It was winter, but, as usual in Odessa, the snow had melted, and the merchant ordered the path for the newlyweds' sleigh to be sprinkled with... sugar. In 2010, the ancient building was renovated and still looks very luxurious. However, the fountain hasn't been functioning since 2007. Nevertheless, it's a must-see for every Odessa resident and visitor. In the 19th century, a luxurious, snow-white mansion was built next to the red building. The architect and first owner are also unknown. With the advent of Soviet power, vacations at coastal health resorts became affordable for ordinary citizens. For a long time, it was a sanatorium for workers in the education sector, or, as it was then called, enlightenment: kindergarten teachers, school teachers, and university professors. Then the "Club" was built – a venue for dance evenings, concerts, and musical performances. Now the building stands empty. Few people know that the sanatorium has three wells of therapeutic mineral water, two of which are used for drinking therapy (Odesskaya No. 1 and Odesskaya No. 2), and the third for hydrotherapeutic procedures. The therapeutic drinking water in the pump room of the Gorky Sanatorium has unique properties: it has choleretic and diuretic effects, regulates stomach acidity and gastrointestinal motility, and improves pancreatic function. The pump room continues to operate to this day, although it looks as if it belongs in the past. Surprisingly, the sanatorium even has a space for enlightenment and yoga. Next to the statue is a pedestal for meditation, and colorful flags hang around. It's worth noting that the sanatorium is home to a large number of cats. So, be sure to bring some cat food for your furry companions.
