The resolution was adopted during Tuesday's plenary after lawmakers debated the successful rescue of the victims following 56 days in captivity. The motion was moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and received the backing of all 108 senators. During the debate, Senator Adams Oshiomhole described Makinde's call for a UN probe as "not statesmanly" and "politics taken too far," arguing that it undermined the efforts of the military and other security agencies involved in the rescue. His additional prayer urging Makinde to withdraw the request was adopted by the Senate after a voice vote. The lawmakers commended President Bola Tinubu, the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and other security personnel for successfully rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers. They also paid tribute to the security personnel who lost their lives during the operation and urged the Federal Government to ensure their families receive all benefits and entitlements. While praising the rescue operation, several senators called on security agencies to replicate the same urgency in rescuing other victims still being held by kidnappers, particularly schoolchildren in Borno State and other parts of the country. They also urged the Federal Government to intensify military and intelligence operations against terrorists, kidnappers and bandits nationwide.
