In 1774, Franklin decided to test the phenomenon by throwing a teaspoon (4 mL) of olive oil into a lake where small waves were formed. More curious than the effect of calming the waves was the fact that the oil had spread completely across the lake, in an area of ​​approximately 2,000 m², forming a thin film. Although it was not Franklin's original intention, this experiment allows an estimate of the order of magnitude of the size of the molecules.
