Ethiopia vs. Eritrea Military Comparison: Who is Stronger?

Ethiopia and Eritrea are two neighboring countries that have deeply intertwined historical paths, but have had repeated periods of political and military tension. They both have some of the largest military forces on the continent of Africa, owing to their longstanding security concerns as well as regional power dynamics. Ethiopia has been able to build a large and diverse military force under its federal system of government to accommodate its regional diversity and decentralized governments. On the other hand, Eritrea has a highly centralized military structure that is based on ideologies and practices established during the struggle for independence. Eritrea has mandatory conscription, while Ethiopia's military service is voluntary.
