1932 Olympics and Gore Mountain Ski Trains - Freddie Anderson

Ski school founder Freddie Anderson (1921-2022) describes skiing at Gore in the Adirondacks before lifts were popular in the United States, and attending the 1932 Olympics as a kid. She is a "matriarch" of thousands of skiers from the 40s to 2000s, having taught ski instructors and inspired generations of skiers to find joy in the sport. She taught at "Big" Gore Mountain since it opened and taught at Maple Ski Ridge in the Capital Region of New York. In this Part 1 video she talks about square dancing with other teens on the train to and from North Creek, about New York City people who came off of trains with odd gear including high heels, she talks about skinning up to the summit of Gore, the stuffed bear stunt and more. Backcountry Profiles is an oral history series that highlights influencial skiers, or skiers who worked solo on great feats of skiing in the 20th century. All either started in human-powered skiing (no lifts) or skied in the backcountry for their whole lives. In New York State we have a few interviews with important people in the sport, Freddie is one.
