(24 Apr 1994) Speaking at a rally attended by more than 100,000 ANC supporters at a sports complex, Mandela appealed to whites not to flee a post-apartheid South Africa and not to listen to rumors that the country would disintegrate into chaos following next week's election. Zulu Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, leader of the rival Inkatha Freedom Party, urged his supporters and all South Africans to lay down their weapons and help ensure peaceful elections.
