Paraguay's president-elect, Santiago Peña, said this month that he will ask Brazil to open classified archives related to the War of the Triple Alliance and to return the military equipment that Brazilian soldiers took from Paraguayan territory. Peña, who will take office on August 15, spoke spontaneously about this issue during a meeting with journalists at the end of a five-day visit to Taiwan, where he traveled to reaffirm bilateral relations. When asked if he would make a formal request, he clarified that he is not seeking to "rewrite history." "I have no resentment, hatred, or anger, but I think it would be good," he said, adding that he would like to have "a conversation" about these issues with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, "in a positive way, not as a demand." The War of the Triple Alliance, considered the largest conflict between countries in Latin America, took place between 1864 and 1870 and pitted Paraguay against three of its neighbors: Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay.
