Why Modern AWD is Deceptive: 4WD vs AWD Explained | Discussion

Most people buy an AWD crossover or SUV thinking all four tires are working together to claw through snow, mud, and rain. The reality? Many modern AWD systems are completely deceptive. In this video, I'll uncover the mechanical reality of modern drivetrain systems, look at the engineering behind power transfer, and expose the massive differences between true mechanical part time 4WD, full time 4WD, "slip and grip" AWD and real, true AWD. I'll break down: The differences in AWD systems, starting with the transversly mounted FWD based, part time AWD systems. These typically have a clutch pack in the rear differential the temporarily turn on to aid with traction and stability. Its added weight and complexity may not be worth a set of winter tires that will provide more stability in turns and braking which AWD cannot provide. True AWD: Having a center differential to distribute torque to front and rear axles distingushes it from fake AWD. These systems can operate on dry pavement and power all four wheels all the time and are typically found in higher end or performance oriented cars. Part time 4WD: Typically used in old school, off road oriented trucks. 4WD vehicles come with a low speed transfer case and a locker to lock front and rear axles for a 50/50 torque split. Full time 4WD: A compromise between true AWD and part time 4WD by adding a transfer case and a center, locking or limited slip differential. Many new vehicles are being opted with this because it limits driveline binding and damage that can occur if part time 4WD is used improperly. The problem? OEM's know that consumers don't know the differences between these systems and are capitalizing on it by using the cheapest system (slip and grip). This doesn't provide much benefit to handling and performance and ads weight and complexity, in addition to cost. Why Manufacturers Do It: The engineering compromise between fuel economy (reducing parasitic drag) and perceived actual off-road stability. .
