Please check it out after watching the video. I wasn't able to fully explain it in the video, but I'm sure many of you were wondering, "What is Ubud?" Apparently, Ubud was originally home to a monarchy, and its royal palace still remains today. The Ubud Royal Palace is the center of the Ubud district, just a stone's throw from the Ubud market, Pasar Ubud, which we visited this time. Apparently, Balinese dance performances are held every night, but unfortunately, our expedition's schedule prevented us from seeing one. From what I've seen on YouTube, it seems like the only thing you can actually do at Ubud Palace is admire the architecture. We decided to skip it (lol). Evening traffic in central Ubud was awful. Roads were sinking and the pavement was peeling, making it dangerous to walk in sandals. Our exploration team was limited by time and it was raining heavily, so we were really struggling. As mentioned briefly in the video, there's a need for transportation. Public taxis, known as Bluebirds, and online taxis like Grab Taxi are finally starting to become popular in Bali. However, in Ubud, a bill has been passed to protect the original taxis (illegal taxis?). While newer taxis are allowed in the Ubud area for drop-offs only, they're not allowed to pick up passengers within the area. We managed to catch the hotel shuttle bus on the way there, but on the way back, we had to hail a local taxi from the COCO Supermarket stand to get back to the hotel. With rip-offs so rampant in Bali, it took courage to get into a mysterious taxi, but I made sure to double-check the destination and fare before boarding. (In the end, nothing happened...) When it comes to souvenirs to buy in Bali, handmade crafts are probably the most popular. Basket bags are famous, but even the wooden carvings are all handmade. Ubud is also apparently a popular destination for painted art, which is why there were so many pieces on display in hotels and markets. Speaking of which, I also saw a few warehouse-like studios scattered around town. Regarding the rapid tourist trend and overtourism in Ubud, one back alley had an atmosphere reminiscent of Tokyo's Harajuku. The more I get to know Ubud, the more I regret this trend. The rip-off mentality is also disappointing... I learned that having a sense of value is crucial when negotiating prices in markets. How much should I spend on a keepsake from Bali? If you go shopping with this in mind, you won't waste time on unnecessary price negotiations, and you won't be stingy and insist on a few hundred yen. The store clerks will also smile (lol).
