What if Aemon Targaryen Was Maester of Winterfell? Let's explore the depths of it in this video. Maester Aemon pushes the door open and glances at the chambers. He knows that Catelyn is gone, having marched off just a few minutes ago. The conversation did not go well, most likely. He suspected as much when he saw Lord Stark returning with the bundle from the south. By now, most of the men who fought in the rebellion had returned North, but a few remained behind. Among those was Ned, who searched for his sister in the Tower of Joy along with a handful of companions. When he returned home, there was no sign of any of these men, but it didn’t mean the new Lord of Winterfell was alone. Instead, he brings with him a bundle that doesn’t contain his possessions or the bones of the fallen. Instead, it has new life in it as he has a son he sired during the war. He does not reveal who the mother is, not even to his wife, but Maester Aemon has a strong suspicion. As he peeks inside, he glances at Ned, leaning over his bed, his head resting on his arm as he looks deep in thought, no doubt trying to make the most of this and figure out what to do next. Aemon: Lord Stark, do you have a moment to talk, perhaps? Ned Ahh, Maester Aemon. Yes, I don’t have anything else to do. Is there something you have to report? Aemon: Well, not a report. I have something I wish to clarify. About your boy, actually. Ned: Wearily. Yes? Alright? What is it that you wish to know that is of such concern to you? Aemon: Your boy. You claim he is yours, but are you certain of that, or is there more you might not be telling me? Ned: Maester, those are the sorts of things a man should not say idly, even one of your stations. This boy is a Stark, and if you doubt that, then you can look at his features. Aemon: Begging your pardon, but I never said he was not a Stark. I do, however, see other features that are most unusual. Ones that are only found amongst the dragons. Though I have been a maester for a long time, I have still been around long enough to hold the children and grandchildren of my brothers. And young Jon has many of them. Ned: Maester… Aemon: You know I am not just any maester. I am the blood of dragons, even if my time to rule has long passed. Do not worry, my lord. I have no intention of revealing your secret, nor do I wish to crown him. I simply wish to know… Ned: This knowledge is not something I will give easily, certainly not to sate your curiosity, Maester. Aemon: Oh, have no fear. I think our goals are closely aligned. I know just as well as you that ruling is a burden. It has been as much a blessing as it has been a curse to my family. I have seen many of my kin lose themselves in the crown. I will not force such a thing on Jon. I simply wish for him to grow up in peace, but also to know some of his kin. Ned: Then what do you propose? Aemon: If you wish to keep him here, allow me to help raise him. I admit I am not as young as I used to be, but my mind is sharp. I can teach him, educate him on the realm and who he is, so that he does not need to grow up alone. It will help put Lady Catelyn at ease if he is not around you as much. And who knows, he may have the makings of a maester as well. Ned: The Citadel is far away, and there are risks to this plan. Aemon: And yet, he will be safe. Once he swears his vows, he will not be able to inherit. Even if he is discovered, no one will be able to crown him. And it is away from the war and destruction that has brought his family down. Ned: I admit that it is tempting. It might be too early to decide his path, but I suppose if he has the aptitude and desire, I will not stop him. With that, they agree on this plan, and soon enough, Maester Aemon takes over Jon’s education. While Catelyn is initially upset at seeing how well Jon is being treated, as if he were a trueborn son, she soon realizes this means they do not need to see each other as much and comes to accept it. While Ned does spend as much time as he can with his boy, still trying to be a father, Aemon handles training him. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
