How to remove a shower cartridge with the stem broken off inside

So you go to take a shower and turn the handle...only to find the handle...in your hand! Not much worse than a plumbing issue that looks like it might need a plumber. No worries here....in advance...this will be a cheap fix. Many shower cartridges can be removed with a cartridge puller. However when the stem is broken off inside the cartridge...a puller won't work. Again...no worries...my fix is cheaper than buying that tool anyways. This fix can be done with items you likey in your toolbox. Here's what I used: Cordless Drill 5/16 drill bit Philips Screwdriver 1-1/4" (3.18cm) Coarse Thread Screw Hammer 3/4" thick board 2" thick board Replacement pieces: Moen cartridge Moen shower trim kit Remember to turn off the water valve to your shower for cartridge removal/replacement and while installing the new hardware kit. If you do not have a separate water valve shut off to your shower; then shut off the main valve. Crack open a faucet a little before opening main valve again. Drill your hole carefully and through the plastic. Make sure to use a board with the hammer for all showers. You don't want to crack your shower liner or tile. I didn't show this, but I did it...and highly recommend cleaning up the buildup behind the old hardware before installing new hardware. I used Goo Gone and it worked amazing. Lastly....good luck and I hope this helps!
