In 2025, the United States and Australia signed a major framework agreement on critical minerals, rare earth supplies, and supply chain security. The goal is clear: to create a secure supply chain for commercial and defense industries that will be less dependent on Chinese control. Now Australia has gone even further, ordering Chinese-linked investors to sell stakes in certain rare earth projects within weeks. One key example is Northern Minerals, where Chinese capital is rapidly being squeezed out of the asset. From Beijing's perspective, this appears provocative, as China itself has been trying to strengthen its access to foreign mineral resources. Australia isn't simply protecting its resources. It's pushing Chinese capital out of strategic assets. But the exclusion of Chinese investors alone won't create a fully-fledged rare earth ecosystem. China still holds the world's largest reserves of rare earth metals, approximately seven times larger than Australia's. But processing is even more important. By 2030, China is expected to still control over 50% of global rare earth metal production, approximately 70% of processing capacity, and approximately 85% of global magnet production. This means that the real bottlenecks lie not only in the mines but also in separation, refining, processing, and magnet manufacturing. Nearly 70% of US rare earth metal imports still come directly from China. For materials such as scandium and yttrium, dependence in certain segments is close to complete. In May 2025, Chinese rare earth metal exports plummeted from approximately 700 tonnes per month to less than 50 tonnes. This demonstrated how quickly Beijing can exert pressure on global industry. Now, the main risk is retaliation. China could slow investment, weaken commodity cooperation, or increase pressure on Australian exports and strategic projects. Australia could protect one critical sector but simultaneously expose other parts of its economy to risk. Meanwhile, Washington is pressuring its allies over Iran, facing inflation, an oil shock, bond market stress, and fragile growth. The CPI is hovering around 3.8%, Bank of America warns that inflation could rise to 5.2%, oil above $100 could hurt global growth, and the yield on 30-year Treasury bonds has risen above 5.11%.
