The 2026 Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Basic Plan for Ecological Transition Education has been announced. This plan aims to move beyond simply learning about the environment and instead focuses on ecological citizenship education where students take direct action and solve problems together with the local community. In particular, this Basic Plan presents the following as key policies: ✅ Mandatory operation of Ecological Transition Education in elementary and middle schools ✅ At least 7 hours of Ecological Transition Education per year per grade level ✅ Environmental education linked to the school curriculum ✅ Seoul-type Ecological Transition Projects ✅ Student-led inquiry projects ✅ Implementation of school carbon neutrality ✅ Ecological education linked to the local community These are the core policies presented in this plan. In this video, rather than simply introducing the plan, we explain how these can be actually applied in schools and suggest types of projects that would be beneficial for students, focusing on examples from the educational field. I also share my experience as an elementary school homeroom teacher, where I personally ran projects with students during a visit to Mt. Cheongnyang, including: Biodiversity surveys Exploring the value of urban forests Investigating the urban heat island effect Analyzing the effectiveness of fine dust reduction These are some of the projects I conducted firsthand. Future Ecological Transition Education is shifting from: ✔ Education that learns about the environment → Education that practices environmental action ✔ Individual practice → School community practice ✔ Rote-based environmental education → Student-led project-based education The core of the Ecological Transition Education promoted by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education is not education that ends with 'knowledge,' but education that leads to 'life.'
