The Second Vatican Council Series: Introduction (2)
Beginning in 1962, The Second Vatican Council, or Vatican II, ushered in remarkable change in the Catholic Church. Pope John XXIII instructed the Council to reflect on modern society and respond to the needs and opportunities of the day. This resulted in an opening up of dialogue, both within the Church and with the world at large, that continues today. Sister Sandra Williams, CSJ, explains that, through Vatican II, "holiness [became] the call for everyone" and was "a recognition of universal dignity."
