বরিশাল বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলের একটি প্রধান শহর। এটি বরিশাল বিভাগের অন্তর্গত ও একই সাথে জেলা ও বিভাগীয় সদর দপ্তর। কীর্তনখোলা নদীর তীরে মোগল আমলে স্থাপিত লবণচৌকি গিরদে বন্দর কে কেন্দ্র করে এ শহর গড়ে ওঠে ও ১৮০১ সালে বরিশালে তৎকালীন বাকেরগঞ্জ জেলার সদর দপ্তর স্থাপিত হলে, শহর হিসেবে এর ব্যাপক গুরুত্ব বাড়ে। বরিশালকে বলা হতো প্রাচ্যের ভেনিচ। খাদ্যশস্য উৎপাদনের একটি মূল উৎস এই বৃহত্তর বরিশাল। বরিশালে একটি নদীবন্দর রয়েছে যেটি দেশের অন্যতম প্রাচীন, দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম ও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি নদীবন্দর। ডিজিটাল জনশুমারী ও গৃহগণনা-২০২২ অনুযায়ী বরিশাল আয়তনে দেশের ১০ম এবং জনসংখ্যায় ১২তম বৃহত্তর মহানগর। বরিশাল নামকরণ সম্পর্কে বিভিন্ন মতভেদ রয়েছে। এক কিংবদন্তি থেকে জানা যায় যে, পূর্বে এখানে খুব বড় বড় শাল গাছ জন্মাতো, আর এই বড় শাল গাছের কারণে (বড়+শাল) বরিশাল নামের উৎপত্তি। খাল বিল জলাভূমিতে ভরা বরিশালে যাতায়াতের অসুবিধাকে মাথায় রেখে চালু হয়েছে কথা "আইতে শাল যাইতে শাল, তার নাম বরিশাল"। কেউ কেউ দাবি করেন, পর্তুগীজ বেরি ও শেলির প্রেমকাহিনীর জন্য বরিশাল নামকরণ করা হয়েছে। নিম্নে আমাদের বরিশাল ভ্রমণের সকল খরচ দেওয়া হলো: Barisal is a major city in the southern part of Bangladesh. It is part of Barisal Division and is also the district and divisional headquarters. The city was developed around the salt port of Girde Bandar, which was established during the Mughal period on the banks of the Kirtankhola River, and its importance as a city increased greatly when the headquarters of the then Bakerganj district was established in Barisal in 1801. Barisal was called the Venice of the East. This greater Barisal is a main source of food grain production. There is a river port in Barisal, which is one of the oldest, second largest and most important river ports in the country. According to the Digital Population and Housing Census-2022, Barisal is the 10th largest metropolis in the country in terms of area and the 12th largest in terms of population. There are various opinions about the naming of Barisal. A legend tells that very large sal trees used to grow here in the past, and the name Barisal (big + sal) was derived from these large sal trees. Keeping in mind the difficulty of transportation in Barisal, which is full of canals and wetlands, the saying "Aite Shaal Jaite Shaal, its name is Barisal" has been coined.[1] Some claim that Barisal was named after the love story of the Portuguese Berry and Shelley.
