Yasmin Mohamed | Feminism and Resistance in Kibera
Yasmin Mohamed is a feminist activist born, raised and living in Kibera, one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. In a place where the word “feminism” is still considered a taboo, Yasmin openly challenges patriarchal structures and gender-based violence. She is the founder of Superb, an organization that works to defend the rights of women and girls in Kibera through education, community support and activism. In this documentary, Yasmin speaks about the daily challenges faced by girls in her community — from lack of access to clean water and sanitation to extreme poverty and sexual violence — and explains why education and intersectional feminism are essential tools for change. Through her work, Yasmin is helping build a new generation of young feminists determined to confront oppression and protect the rights of women and girls in one of the most marginalized urban areas in Africa.
