But a mysterious stranger named Rurik begins acting as Karin's protector, which ultimately leads to a brutal showdown between Rurik and Aghen. Reviews: In ancient times, the fierce and cruel warrior Hagen (Frank Ross) hunts down Queen Karin (Lisa Wagner) and her son Moki (Louis Polletin) to marry them and seize the kingdom of her husband, King Arald (Jack Stuart). Karin and Moki hide in a cabin in the woods, living like peasants, and are protected by a stranger, the warrior Helmut (Cameron Mitchell), a master of knives. Moki befriends Helmut, who teaches him to hunt and fight, and later Karin tells him that three years earlier her husband had sailed overseas to obtain grain for his starving people. The ship sank off the coast of Britain, and they have had no news of Arald since. She goes on to explain that Hagen was responsible for the famine, having broken the truce between the kingdoms of Arald and King Rurik and killing the latter's wife and son. Driven by revenge, King Rurik invaded her kingdom with his warriors, slaughtering the people and raping the women, including her on her wedding night, though he spared Arald's life. Helmut, who is actually King Rurik, falls in love with Karin and wonders if Moki is his son. This is the first Mario Bava action film I've seen, and I found it to be an underrated story of revenge and redemption. The screenplay is very well written, unfolds a dramatic story, and is supported by superb direction, acting, and magnificent cinematography. In the end, the viewer is never quite sure whether Moki is the son of Rurik or Arald, but Karin's tears might suggest that she knows the truth about Moki's paternity.
