On August 9, 2004, a pipe ruptured inside the turbine building of Unit 3 of the Mihama Nuclear Power Plant in Fukui Prefecture, spewing out high-temperature steam at approximately 140°C and 10 atmospheres of pressure. Five workers were killed. This was the worst human accident at a commercial nuclear power plant in Japan.
