Kbal Spean || Cambodia || River of Thousand Lingas

Welcome to another journey into the heart of ancient wonders. Today, we explore a hidden gem in Cambodia—Kbal Spean, also known as The River of a Thousand Lingas. Nestled deep in the lush forest of Phnom Kulen National Park, Kbal Spean lies about 25 kilometers northeast of the famous Angkor temples. But unlike grand stone towers, this sacred site is carved directly into nature—into the riverbed itself. The name “Kbal Spean” means “Bridge Head” in Khmer. And here, water and worship meet in a breathtaking way. The river flows over hundreds of small stone carvings called lingas, symbols of Lord Shiva. These lingas are arranged in perfect rows, turning the river into a sacred stream believed to carry spiritual blessings downstream to Angkor. But it’s not just lingas. The rocks also hold beautiful carvings of Hindu gods—Vishnu, Brahma, Lakshmi, Rama, and Hanuman. One stunning scene shows Vishnu resting on the serpent Ananta, Lakshmi at his feet, and Brahma rising from a lotus blooming from Vishnu’s navel. These images tell stories from Hindu mythology and reflect the deep spiritual meaning of water in ancient rituals. Kbal Spean was created during the 11th and 12th centuries, under the rule of King Suryavarman 1 and King Udayadityavarman 2. It’s believed that forest hermits carved many of these sacred symbols. In 1059 AD, King Udayadityavarman 2 even consecrated a golden linga here. To reach Kbal Spean, visitors hike through the forest for about 40 minutes. The trail is 2 kilometers long and gently uphill. Along the way, you’ll hear birdsong, see waterfalls, and finally arrive at the riverbed where the carvings come to life—especially after the rainy season when the water clears. Though known to locals, the site was officially discovered in 1969 by French ethnologist Jean Boulbet. Due to war, it remained closed until 1989. Today, it welcomes tourists, pilgrims, and history lovers from around the world. Near the site is the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity, where rescued animals are protected and cared for—adding another layer of meaning to this sacred place. So whether you're drawn by history, nature, or spirituality, Kbal Spean offers a rare experience: a temple carved into a river, where every drop of water tells a story. Thanks for watching.
