Seaside Holiday - 1933 | The Archivist Presents | #253
I am not sure if I will get to see the sea during this summer of Covid-19. It's lovely to look back on this British Movietone film of seaside antics during the early 1930s. This was the early days of sound newsreel and there is no commentary. I find it very relaxing to watch and listen to these revellers having fun. Our records don't show where this lovely film was shot - perhaps you know? Crowded paddle steamer arriving at Pier. The crowds stream off. Loaded lorry with trunks and cases. Street scene in seaside town with crowds strolling around in summer wear. Woman selling Seaside rock at shop door. Elevated shot of crowded beach. Shot taken from the side of a Scenic railway. Shots taken of same with the camera in one of the cars. Other shots of the Scenic Railway. Close shots of girls screaming in one of the cars. Shot of the Caterpillar amusement. Shot of very crowded beach with deck chairs and people in the sea. Close shot of woman applying sun tan oil. Various other beach shots and bathing. Woman paddles. Canoes paddled on the sea. Shots of people in the sea. Two little boys in the water. Children make castles in the sand. Children seated on and taking donkey rides on the sands. Shot of Oyster, Whelk and Cockle Bar. People stand around and eat same. Concert Party troop dance on stage in the open air. Pan shot round to the audience. Concert Party dancing. Shot of people strolling on the beach under the cliffs.People stand and sit around the edge of swimming pool.Children seated on edge (The pool appears to be a natural rock one). Pan shot of holiday makers. Man looking through telescope and sees the bare back of a bather Sunshade being twirled around. Shot of swimming pool and bathers. Crowds disport themselves in the water on various amusements, revolving plate etc. Close shots of people in water. Pan from legs of bathing girls walking to beachs. Plane flies over pool.Aerial shot over swimming pool and beach. Crowd of people on prom overlook open air dancing. Shots of the dancing. Putting green and play Small boy with large ball. Night shot of band playing in illuminated bandstand.
