County Manager's Excuse Left Me Speechless!
GENESEE COUNTY'S EXCUSE FOR LOCKING OUT THE PUBLIC?! On March 27, 2025, I visited the Genesee County Building 2 and discovered that many of the public offices inside were restricted from public access. Citizens could not simply walk into the offices of their own county government. Instead, they needed an appointment or had to wait for someone to unlock the doors and allow them in. After that visit, the County Manager contacted me by email and offered to give me a tour of the facility. During our discussions, I expressed my concerns about a government building that operates behind locked doors and limits access to the public it serves. More than a year later, on April 17, 2026, I returned to see whether anything had changed. It hadn't. The same restrictions remained in place, and this time the County Manager personally came downstairs to explain why. Several reasons were offered, including security concerns. But one explanation stood out above all the others. According to the County Manager, if the building were not secured, someone could potentially enter the facility and live under a staircase without county officials knowing about it. Yes, you heard that correctly. The possibility of a squatter secretly living inside the county building was presented as a justification for restricting public access to public offices. Genesee County has a population of approximately 58,000 residents, making it one of New York's smaller counties. Yet many counties that are significantly larger and serve far more residents allow greater public access to government offices without imposing similar restrictions. Should citizens have unrestricted access to the offices of their local government during normal business hours? Does Genesee County have a legitimate security concern, or is this simply an excuse to keep the public at arm's length? Watch the full video and decide for yourself.
