We look at Birgit Nilsson’s 1957 recording of “Ecco l’orrido campo… Ma dall’arido stelo divulsa” from Giuseppe Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera—a scene that drives the soprano from a dark A3 all the way to a blazing C6. It’s one of Verdi’s most demanding dramatic moments. Was Nilsson fully up to its challenges?
