The M8 at 50: Glasgow and the Motorway

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the completion of the M8 motorway around Glasgow city centre. Originally part of plans for an Inner Ring Road, its construction continues to divide opinion. Join us for a trip through the history of the project, from the 1940s proposals of the Bruce Plan, the development and construction phases of the 1960s and 70s and a revision of the plans in the 1980s. We’ll also be considering the impact the M8’s construction had on the city and what the future holds for its network of urban motorways and expressways. The talk will reveal striking facts and figures about the project, illustrated by newly unearthed photos from the Scottish Roads Archive collection.
