#21 Cycling Switzerland to Southeast Asia: Tajikistan, Riding the Afghan Border

This week, we cycled from Kalaikhum to Khorugh, tracing the rugged mountain roads of Tajikistan along the Afghan border. The route followed a narrow valley carved by a powerful river, with the road often clinging to steep rock faces. The surface was rough and dusty, making progress slow and physically demanding. Despite the heat, we found relief in cold mountain streams and hidden waterfalls — natural spots that offered moments of rest and refreshment. We spent a night camping right next to the Afghan border, with only the river separating us. Tajik soldiers were stationed along the road, watching over this remote and sensitive stretch of land. The sense of remoteness was deepened by the limited access to food and clean water — a real challenge in these high-altitude, isolated villages. We passed through the town of Rushan and several smaller villages, where life felt simple, quiet, and deeply connected to the mountains. All along the way, we were surrounded by spectacular landscapes — snow-capped peaks in the distance, dramatic cliffs, and endless ridgelines. Each morning began with golden light spilling over the mountains, and each evening ended with glowing sunsets behind the high valleys. This leg marked the final stretch before joining the famous Pamir Highway — and it delivered some of the most dramatic scenery and intense riding of our journey so far.
