I've been reworking the materials I use for my vocational school classes so that they can be used at this week's membership live show. I'm worried it might be a little difficult (lol). Let's do a little preparation. There is a geological formation that produces a lot of coal. It's called the Carboniferous Formation. This stratum contains material from 350 to 300 million years ago. Plant fibers contain a substance called lignin. You may have heard that it is difficult for herbivores to break down the plant fiber cellulose, but cellulose is a weakling compared to lignin. Herbivores cannot digest lignin at all. During the Carboniferous period, plants evolved and huge forests began to form, but in fact, there were no organisms capable of breaking down lignin. As a result, the plant remains remained without decomposing, and gradually became buried in the soil. Over a long period of time, they were converted into coal in the buried soil. However, the amount of coal is extremely low in strata from the Carboniferous period onwards. Why? Because an organism capable of decomposing the plant remains finally appeared. It's called "white rot fungus." It's a complicated name, but it's the thing that many of you eat. At the Biopark, we once offered an experience where we injected white rot fungus spawn into cut tree trunks. We use a large amount of this in the back of the insectarium to raise stag beetle larvae.
