Through these liturgical acts, Christians exalt the person of Mary in the action that renews the sacrifice of Christ. We pray that just as she aided at the Wedding at Cana, we have faith and confidence that she will also intercede for us in our own moments of need and distress. -First Reading – Lamentations 2:2, 10-14, 18-19 Jerusalem mourns her destruction. Her elders sit in silence and dust. “Cry out, O daughter Zion! Let your tears flow like a torrent.” The prophets gave false visions that hid her guilt, so she fell. Theme: Honest lament before God. Sin has consequences, but tears open the door to mercy. -Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 74:1-2, 3-4, 5-7, 20-21 R/. Lord, forget not the lives of your poor ones. “O God, why do you cast us off forever?… Remember your covenant, for the land is full of violence.” A plea from exile. -Gospel Acclamation – Matthew 8:17 Alleluia, alleluia. Christ took away our infirmities and bore our diseases. -Gospel – Matthew 8:5-17 A Roman centurion asks Jesus to heal his servant: “Only say the word and my servant will be healed.” Jesus marvels at his faith.
