I know verbs like “see” and “hear,” but the grammar around them is a bit confusing. Yeah, perception verbs can be tricky at first. They’re verbs related to our senses, like seeing, hearing, feeling, watching, or noticing. What part feels confusing to you? ねえダニエル、最近文法を勉強しているんだけど、『知覚動詞』というものが出てきたんだ。「見る」や「聞く」といった動詞は知っているけれど、それらに関する文法が少しややこしくて。そうだね、知覚動詞は最初は難しく感じるかもしれない。見る、聞く、感じる、眺める、気づくといった、五感に関わる動詞のことだね。どのあたりが分かりにくいかな？ (2) Mainly the sentence patterns. Sometimes I see sentences like “I saw him run,” and other times “I saw him running.” Both look correct, but I don’t really understand the difference. That’s a great question. The difference is subtle but important. When you say “I saw him run,” it usually means you saw the whole action from start to finish. But “I saw him running” focuses more on the action in progress. 主に文章のパターンかな。 “I saw him run” という文もあれば、“I saw him running” という文もある。どちらも正解に見えるけれど、違いがよくわからなくて。いい質問だね。違いはわずかだけど重要だよ。“I saw him run” と言うときは、通常、その動作を最初から最後まで全部見たことを意味する。でも “I saw him running” は、動作の最中に焦点を当てているんだ。 (3) So if I say “I heard her sing,” that means I heard the entire song? Exactly. And if you say “I heard her singing,” it suggests you heard part of the song while it was happening. English uses these forms to show how we experienced the action. じゃあ、“I heard her sing” と言ったら、その歌を最初から最後まで聴いたということ？その通り。そして “I heard her singing” と言えば、歌っている途中の声が聞こえたことを示唆する。英語では、その動作をどのように体験したかを示すためにこれらの形を使い分けるんだ。 (4) That makes sense. I guess it’s similar to how we experience things in real life. Sometimes we notice the whole event, and sometimes just a moment. Right. That’s why perception verbs are interesting. They describe direct experience. You’re not imagining or thinking—you’re using your senses. なるほど。現実の世界で物事を体験するのと似ているね。出来事の全部に気づくこともあれば、一瞬だけのこともあるし。そうだね。だから知覚動詞は面白いんだ。直接的な体験を説明するものだからね。想像したり考えたりしているのではなく、感覚を使っているんだよ。 (5) I also noticed that we don’t use “to” with these verbs. For example, we say “I saw him leave,” not “I saw him to leave.” Correct. With perception verbs like “see,” “hear,” and “feel,” we use the base form of the verb, not the infinitive. That’s a key rule. (6) What about verbs like “watch” and “listen to”? Are they the same? They’re similar, but there’s a small difference. “See” and “hear” often describe passive perception—things you notice naturally. “Watch” and “listen to” are more active. You choose to pay attention. (7) Oh, I see. So “I heard music” just happened naturally, but “I listened to music” means I intentionally focused on it. Exactly. The same goes for “see” versus “watch.” You might see something accidentally, but you watch a movie on purpose. That explains a lot. What about “feel”? Can it work the same way? (8) Yes. For example, “I felt my phone vibrate” means you noticed the vibration. You can also say “I felt the ground shaking,” which describes an ongoing sensation. Interesting. And sometimes “feel” is about emotions too, right? True, but that’s a slightly different use. As a perception verb, it’s about physical sensation. Context usually makes it clear. (9) I’ve also seen sentences like “I noticed him enter the room.” Is “notice” also a perception verb? Yes, it is. “Notice” often means you suddenly became aware of something. It works with the same grammar patterns as “see” and “hear.” I think I’m starting to understand. Perception verbs describe how we directly experience actions, and the verb form shows how much of the action we experienced. (10) Exactly. Once you connect the grammar to real-life experience, it becomes much easier to remember. Thanks, Daniel. Talking it through like this really helped.
