This is a test ride review of the Kawasaki W800 Special Edition. It features nostalgic yet unique styling and a distinctive vertical twin engine with bevel gears driving the intake and exhaust valves. It's not particularly fast, but it's not so underpowered that it leaves you dissatisfied. It offers a rich ride and a moderate size. It's surprisingly light to handle and easy to use, blending seamlessly into your daily life. I own a 1995 W650, and the W800 was one of the earliest models released by MotoBasic, so I have a special attachment to this series. However, since test rides will likely become more difficult in the future, I decided to try out the current Special Edition model once again. The first time I test rode the W800 was at the launch event held in Nishiizu in 2011, and at the time my impression was that it hadn't changed much compared to the W650, except that torque was stronger due to the larger engine displacement... Redriving it this time, I realized that it has an entirely different character from the W650. Perhaps it's because it's the final model and is highly refined, but the ride is comfortable and smooth. At the same time, the vibrations don't subside even as the engine speed increases, and it combines a wildness and fun that's not found in modern bikes that prioritize smoothness. It would be a shame for the W800 to disappear from the market, but as the last chance to buy one new is approaching, I strongly recommend that anyone who's been interested take it for a test ride.
