What’s So Special About This Abandoned Laundry Plant?

Marathon Linen Supply Company was founded in 1927 on Detroit’s east side by Greek immigrants Nicholas and George Genematas as a commercial laundry and linen rental business. Starting in a small building at Warren and Moran, the company expanded over time, later operating under the Marathon Linen Service and Martex names. The structure features unique ornamental details that possibly reference the Greek figure Pheidippides, aligning with the company’s name. The business operated for decades, employing Detroiters through the Great Depression and World War II, but also faced environmental challenges in the late 20th century. Marathon Linen continued operating into the early 2000s before being dissolved in 2010, leaving the structure vacant and polluted.
